De la Fuente: Result deceptive, Spain should have thrashed Georgia

In the Round of 16 match of the European Championship on July 1st, Spain staged a remarkable comeback after conceding an early goal, eventually defeating their opponents 4-1 thanks to goals from Rodri, Ruiz, Nico Williams, and Olmo. Despite the victory, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente believes the scoreline did not fully reflect the reality of the match.

He said: “We are very happy, knowing how hard it is to get this far, our achievements are the best proof. In fact, based on the performance on the field, the result of this game should have been 8-1 or 9-1. The opponent showed threats on counterattacks, and we also made some mistakes.”

For the team’s turnaround, de la Fuente praised the players highly: “The comeback is all thanks to the players’ excellent performance. Although we gave guidance from the bench, they understood the game very well, knowing when to increase running and when to control the ball. Facing such a difficult situation, we remained calm, scored four goals, and actually had more chances to score. This is growth for the team, an increase in confidence and security.”

Speaking about the atmosphere in the dressing room after the game, he shared: “The players were incredibly excited because this game was very important for us, it allowed us to advance to the quarter-finals, where we will face Germany, and we know the importance of this match. The victory was not easy, it was won through our tireless efforts. We maintain a humble attitude and move forward step by step.”

Looking ahead to the clash against Germany, de la Fuente emphasized the importance of preparation: “The top priority is to recover physically, and then, we will stick to our football philosophy and continue to play to our strengths. Our team’s strengths are becoming increasingly evident, and we are becoming more unique every day. To be fair, the team has already proven its worth. Against Germany, we must be at our best.”
