Spalletti: Inter’s early title win led to lack of focus

In the early hours of June 30th, defending champions Italy were knocked out of the European Championship round of 16 after a 0-2 loss to Switzerland. After the game, coach Spalletti attributed the defeat to, among other things, a lack of focus due to Inter’s early title win.

Spalletti said: “Inter secured the Serie A title too early… I’ve stayed in touch with Inter, making sure Inzaghi kept training intensity high until the end of the season… but maybe, on a mental level, the players have let their guard down.”

Spalletti called up five Inter players for the European Championship: Frattesi, Barella, Bastoni, Darmian, and Dimarco. In this match, Barella, Darmian, and Bastoni started, Frattesi came on as a substitute, and Dimarco remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes.
