Italy was eliminated from the European Championship in the round of 16 after a 2-0 loss to Switzerland. However, while the Italian national team is headed home, three Italian coaches remain in the competition: Montella, Tedesco, and Calzona.
Italy’s elimination was not entirely unexpected, as the last two European champions both fell in the Round of 16 during their title defense. Spain was eliminated in the 2016 European Championship, and Portugal in the 2020 European Championship.
Although the Italian national team is out, the German European Championship will still have Italian football elements. The Round of 16 will continue, and three more Italian coaches will lead their teams in Germany.
Calzona is first up, with his Slovakia team playing England tonight at midnight. He took charge of Slovakia in the summer of 2022 and served as interim coach of Napoli in February 2023. Interestingly, he worked at Napoli in the 2021/22 season as Spalletti’s assistant coach.
Tedesco’s Belgium will face France in the round of 16. Although he was born in Italy, he moved to Germany with his parents at a young age. Montella and his Turkish team will face Austria.
Originally, there were five Italian coaches leading teams in this European Championship, but Marco Rossi’s Hungary team was eliminated in the group stage.
