England’s performance at the European Championships has fallen short of expectations, leading to criticism of manager Gareth Southgate. The FA is now taking action after AI-generated “interview” videos featuring Southgate have surfaced online.
In these videos, Southgate is portrayed as making crude remarks about players, even disparaging those who did not make the squad. Other videos feature Southgate apologizing to the entire nation for the team’s performance, all while appearing to be giving a press conference in a convincingly fabricated setting. These fake videos are going viral on social media, with some reaching millions of views.
Some fans who watched the videos have said, “It’s just typical British humor, I think it helps boost team morale and keep people happy, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Obviously Southgate isn’t online at this time, he wouldn’t be reading any social media posts.”
Another user commented, “These videos are funny, similar videos have been made of Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, and Mikel Arteta during the Premier League season.”
The FA is taking the videos seriously. In a statement, they said, “Just as we would with any negative video content, we will take action to remove these offensive videos. England are currently focused on the upcoming match against Slovakia.”
