Data Blogger: Belgium Has the Toughest Path to the Final, England Has the Easiest

Recently, overseas data blogger “Football Meets Data” ranked the difficulty of each team’s path to the final in the Euro 16 based on the latest Elo ranking. The results showed that Belgium has the toughest path, while England has the easiest.

According to the latest Elo ranking, the strongest team in the Euro 16 is Spain, followed by France and England in second and third place. The teams ranked 4th to 10th are Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland, respectively.

Combining this ranking with the specific match-ups and groups in the round of 16, it can be seen that Belgium has the toughest potential path to the final. In the worst-case scenario, they would have to defeat Spain (1), France (2), and Portugal (4) to reach the final.

In contrast, the much-criticized Three Lions have the easiest path on paper. However, in the worst-case scenario, their opponents before reaching the final would be ranked 23 (Slovakia), 8 (Italy), and 5 (Netherlands) in the Elo rankings.
