Italy’s disappointing Euro 2024 campaign came to an end with a 0-2 loss to Switzerland in the Round of 16. The defending champions’ exit was met with anger and disappointment from Italian fans.
Italy appeared lackluster from the start and their confidence dwindled after conceding the second goal just 27 seconds into the second half. The team’s struggles ultimately led to a 0-2 defeat.
After the match, Italy captain Gianluigi Donnarumma and his teammates approached the fans to apologize for their performance. However, the fans were not receptive, expressing their anger and urging the players to leave.
In an interview, Donnarumma admitted that Italy lacked courage and quality during the match, failing to press effectively and giving Switzerland too much space. He also highlighted a lack of desire to react and support each other.
“We were lacking in every aspect today, we lacked courage and quality,” Donnarumma conceded. “The first half was terrible because they dominated and hurt us. We should have started the second half strongly, but we conceded immediately, making it even harder. We disappointed everyone, and we must accept it. Switzerland had too much time to think, we were not aggressive enough. We didn’t react, there was a lack of desire to help each other. We were missing everything today.”
Italian fans were deeply disappointed by the team’s performance, believing they had failed to live up to their potential and showed a lack of spirit. The fans rejected Donnarumma’s apology and booed in response.
While acknowledging Italy’s subpar performance, Donnarumma also pointed out: “There are a lot of talented young players in the team, they need to gain experience so they can succeed in the future. I know it’s hard to accept this now, but we must look to the future.”
