Denmark will face host Germany in the Round of 16 at the European Championship, and before the match, Danish midfielder Eriksen said the team has the opportunity to continue creating miracles against the odds.
Under head coach Kasper Hjulmand, Denmark qualified for the knockout stage as the runner-up in their group, marking their second consecutive European Championship appearance where they progressed beyond the group stage. Eriksen played a key role in Denmark’s group stage campaign, scoring against Slovenia and becoming the first Danish player to achieve double-digit shots and chances created in a single continental/world tournament (10 shots, 13 chances created). Denmark has lost to the host nation five times in previous European Championships, but Eriksen believes this tournament presents an opportunity to rewrite history.
Eriksen said: “There’s no bigger game than playing a knockout match against Germany on German soil. I’m really looking forward to it. A lot of people think we’re already out, so we can now go all out with no pressure. I’m looking forward to the team showing that we can compete with the best at the European Championship. I believe we can beat the Germans, but it will take a lot of effort to make it happen.”
Eriksen has become Denmark’s most capped player, surpassing teammate Simon Kjær with 133 appearances for the national team. The 32-year-old said: “I am incredibly proud of earning so many caps for my country. It feels a little surreal because the players on that list are all Danish football legends. Being alongside them is something I can look back on with a smile after I retire.”
