Official news, the round of 16 match between Romania and the Netherlands will be refereed by referee Zwayer from Berlin. He previously officiated the matches between Italy vs. Albania and Portugal vs. Turkey. This will be his 3rd appearance in the tournament.
The 43-year-old Zwayer is a referee with a “record” – in 2005, he was embroiled in the illegal sports investment scandal in German football. At the time, a German referee, Hoyzer, was sentenced to two years and five months in prison and banned from refereeing for life for helping an illegal Croatian platform manipulate matches.
Hoyzer then asked his referee colleagues for assistance, including Felix Zwayer, who was 23 at the time. Before the game between Wuppertal and Werder Bremen II, Hoyzer gave Zwayer 300 euros, which the latter accepted. Although later Zwayer was not banned for life because he could report in advance and truthfully confessed, he was only suspended for 6 months.
