After losing to Germany in the round of 16 of the European Championship early morning on June 30th, Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand expressed his extreme dissatisfaction with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions, calling them a “disgrace”. He was particularly angered by the VAR’s decision to disallow an Anderson goal in the 48th minute due to offside. Hjulmand questioned the decision in an interview with German media: “We are talking about a difference of just one centimeter. Is this really an indisputable fact?”
He held up his phone to show a picture indicating the offside situation of Anderson’s goal, which showed Danish player Skov being just slightly offside. “Can technology really be that accurate? Can it accurately determine the exact moment the pass was made?” he questioned.
Furthermore, Hjulmand also expressed doubts about the handball incident involving Anderson. The incident, reviewed by VAR, resulted in a penalty awarded to Denmark, which Havertz converted.
The Danish coach stressed: “Players inevitably use their arms in games, and it was a very close contact. These two decisions were extremely ridiculous and directly affected the outcome of the match.”
Despite this, Hjulmand showed sportsmanship. “Maybe even without these decisions, Germany would have won, they were indeed excellent.” he admitted. At the same time, he generously wished Germany good luck in their future matches, hoping they “have a smooth journey”.
