According to German newspaper Bild, a sudden police operation caught everyone’s attention during the Germany-Denmark Euro 2024 Round of 16 match, which Germany ultimately won 2-0.
At 11:20 pm local time, special police units suddenly appeared in the underground area and surrounding areas of the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.
Reports indicate that the incident stemmed from a mysterious man wearing a mask and carrying a backpack, who climbed onto the stadium’s roof during the match and refused to comply with orders to leave. This unexpected situation may have resulted in a short delay to the start of the second half.
Television footage captured referee Michael Oliver communicating with both captains, Ilkay Gündogan and Kasper Schmeichel, pointing towards the roof and seemingly explaining the urgent and delicate situation. However, the decision was made to continue the game. Meanwhile, a helicopter was dispatched to the scene, shining a powerful light on the roof to monitor the man’s movements.
It wasn’t until the end of the match that the police took action, surrounding the man on the stadium roof and successfully apprehending him. Video footage shows the police officers armed with guns during the operation.
Police later reported, “The man is in police custody and has been confirmed to pose no substantial threat to public safety. Currently, details regarding the individual’s identity and motivation remain under investigation and cannot be disclosed.” How he managed to reach the stadium roof remains a mystery.
