Analyzing the upcoming Euro 2024 quarter-final clash between Germany and Spain, former German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn believes that despite Spain’s overall technical prowess, lack of big-game experience could be their undoing.
The 54-year-old former German goalkeeper said in an interview with Welt-TV: “From a player perspective, they (Spain) might be slightly better than us, but they are too small and they lack experience. In fact, they have a youth team structure because they have two very young strikers.”
Lehmann is referring to 16-year-old Lamine Yamal and 21-year-old Nico Williams, but when it comes to lack of experience, perhaps Spain’s starting goalkeeper, 27-year-old Unai Simon, can speak for himself with his 43 appearances for the national team. Additionally, 31-year-old Álvaro Morata and 28-year-old Rodri are seasoned players, the latter being hailed as the world’s best number 6.
However, Lehmann’s assessment of Spain’s physical disadvantage is quite accurate: “Spain has a clear disadvantage in terms of height. From the goalkeeper to the center-backs to the forward Morata, the entire team is too short.”
