Spain’s 16-year-old sensation, Lamine Yamal, has impressed at the European Championships, providing two assists so far and helping Spain reach the quarter-finals. However, one small detail has caught everyone’s attention: Yamal’s boots feature not only the Spanish flag but also the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea.
Although born in Catalonia, Yamal’s parents hail from Morocco and Equatorial Guinea, respectively. This gesture is a tribute to his parents’ countries of origin. Notably, Yamal is eligible to represent any of these three nations in international competition, ultimately choosing his birthplace, Spain.
Morocco had previously attempted to recruit Yamal for their national team, but failed. In 2023, the Moroccan Football Federation president claimed they met with Yamal’s parents, but ultimately he declined to play for Morocco. The president stated, “We conveyed our plans to him and his family, but Yamal has decided to go to Spain. Spain and Morocco are only 14 kilometers apart, so this choice is understandable, and we respect his decision.”
