Georgia’s national team, after reaching the round of 16 at the European Championship, has returned home to a hero’s welcome in Tbilisi. Thousands of fans gathered in Freedom Square to celebrate the team’s historic accomplishment.
The Georgian Agenda news agency reported: “From its entry into UEFA and FIFA in 1992, Georgia’s team has achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for a continental tournament for the first time, reaching the group stage. Tens of thousands of fans have gathered in Freedom Square in the capital, Tbilisi, to welcome the national team’s coaches and players, who are being treated as heroes.”
The grand welcome ceremony touched the entire Georgian team. Nika Kvekveskiri, speaking on behalf of the players, said: “Thank you. You have given us extraordinary energy. The greatest strength of this team comes from the close bond between us and our fans!”
Georgia’s head coach, former Bayern Munich star Willy Sagnol, remarked: “My three and a half years in Georgia have been very challenging. The players have worked tirelessly to achieve their goals. I want to continue working here for another three and a half years. Regardless of how things may progress, we will strive for our common goals with all our strength.”
The Georgian Minister of Sport addressed the celebration, saying: “Our boys have given us a true miracle, but I believe this is just the beginning. We will have new and exciting events starting in September, and I am confident that many fans will come to watch.”
Georgia’s next match will be against the Czech Republic on September 7 in the UEFA Nations League. Additionally, the Georgian Football Federation aims to qualify for the 2026 World Cup following their European Championship success. European qualifying will begin in March 2025.
Georgia’s national leader also spoke at the ceremony, stating: “Today’s achievement is a miracle. This is the Georgia I need. The boys, through hard work, dedication, talent, professionalism, team spirit, and love for their country, have created this miracle. This is their glory, and it belongs to all Georgians.”
