Portuguese Legend Holds Record for Most Shots Without a Goal at Euros, Ronaldo One Shot Away from Equaling

So far at this European Championship, Ronaldo has taken 20 shots, including 8 on target, but still hasn’t found the back of the net. According to foreign media statistics, since 1980, Ronaldo is the 5th player at the European Championship to take at least 20 shots without scoring a goal.

The current record holder is Ronaldo’s Portuguese compatriot Deco, who attempted 24 shots at the 2004 European Championship without scoring, but Deco helped Portugal reach the final as a starter, eventually losing 0-1 to Greece and finishing as runner-up.

Besides Deco, familiar names like De Bruyne and Dani Olmo have also achieved this record, attempting 21 shots each in the 2016 and 2020 European Championships respectively, ultimately failing to find the net.

In the quarter-finals, Portugal will face France, and Ronaldo needs just 4 shots to equal the record held by his former national team teammate, though he and Portuguese fans alike would prefer that this situation doesn’t happen.
