In the early hours of July 6th, after France eliminated Portugal in the European Championship quarter-finals, French captain Mbappé expressed his joy and admitted he was substituted due to physical condition.
Following France’s qualification for the 2024 European Championship semi-finals, Mbappé spoke to the media in the mixed zone, not hiding his joy at the team’s victory in the penalty shootout.
“It’s incredible, we are so happy! It’s hard to replicate this kind of performance, reaching the semi-finals, we did it. We will try to recover, slowly prepare for the match against Spain. We are in a state of euphoria now, but we will analyze the game further. I won’t lie, we didn’t talk much in the dressing room about not scoring. Now we need to keep working hard.”
Mbappé also explained why he was substituted in extra time, “I talked to the coach at the end of regulation time. I said I would try my best, but in extra time I wasn’t feeling good, I was too tired. He said okay, I had to come off.”
Finally, Mbappé hoped to be back in shape for the match against Spain: “I hope to be able to help the team in the semi-final, but most importantly, I am very happy for the team. I need to prepare, face the challenge of Spain.”
