Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is currently with the England squad for the European Championships, recently gave an interview to talksport. Gallagher discussed his feelings about the tournament so far, the competition within the team, and more.
On being substituted at half-time against Slovenia
“Obviously, it’s not a good feeling because I always want to play more for the team, but it was very exciting to start for England. It was a tough game, we didn’t create many chances. I understood the manager making the change with [Jude] Bellingham to try and freshen things up, it was completely understandable. Regarding my time in midfield, Southgate talked to me first before telling the team about the substitution.”
On the competition in the England midfield
“We all have our strengths, and so far the manager has picked what he thinks is best. Personally, I’m always energetic, trying my best in both attack and defence. [Trent] Alexander-Arnold’s passing is great, [Jude] Bellingham is confident and he controls the tempo of the game.”
On rumours about England switching to a three-at-the-back system
“(Whether it’s a three-at-the-back or a four-at-the-back system) there won’t be any new tactical changes for England, every tactic is something we’ve drilled before and we’re all familiar with. There’s been a lot of players in the England midfield over the last few years, but you know they do similar things.”
