Romania was eliminated from the Euro 2024 Round of 16 after a 0-3 loss to the Netherlands. Despite the disappointing result, Romania captain Nicolae Stanciu said he and his teammates had achieved their goals at the tournament and could leave with their heads held high.
Speaking after the game, Stanciu said: “We are very disappointed with this result, because we truly believed we could win this match. But I am incredibly proud of my teammates. I am happy with how we performed throughout the tournament, these moments will stay with us for life.”
He also extended a special thank you to Romania’s fans: “Our fans were incredible, they were behind us all the way, no matter where we played. I hope we made them proud, just like we felt their support in the stadium.”
Stanciu continued: “We have learned that if we are united, and we give our all on the pitch, we can achieve great things. Even though we didn’t make it to the quarter-finals, I hope everyone is proud and acknowledges what we have achieved as a national team, after all, we haven’t reached this stage for 24 years.”
Stanciu ended by encouraging his teammates: “I don’t think we should have any regrets, instead, we should applaud each other, congratulate each other. We may not have reached the quarter-finals, but we should leave with our heads held high, because we proved our strength and team spirit.”
