Alan Shearer: Palmer and Gordon should start together against Switzerland, Konsa can replace Guehi

England legend Alan Shearer has expressed his views on England’s squad adjustments, saying that Palmer and Gordon should start together in the quarter-finals against Switzerland, while Konsa can replace the suspended Guehi.

Alan Shearer said: “I would start Palmer and Gordon together. Munu can stay on, because he’s done enough. Guehi is suspended, and I’d choose Konsa to replace him. He’s been more involved, so I’ll let him play. As for left-back, that’s another problem. I don’t know if Luke Shaw can play, he hasn’t played for months, so he can’t start.”

In fact, at half-time in the round of 16 match against Slovakia, Alan Shearer called on Southgate to bring Palmer and Gordon on via social media.

In the first two group games, Southgate experimented with Arnold partnering Rice in a double midfield, but it didn’t work well. In the third group game against Slovenia, Southgate dropped Arnold and Gallagher replaced Rice’s midfield partner. Replacing Arnold with Gallagher was Southgate’s only change to the starting line-up throughout the group stage. Even in the round of 16 against Slovakia, Southgate only made a change to Rice’s partner, this time replacing Gallagher with Munu. The front four remained Kane, Foden, Bellingham and Saka.

If Alan Shearer’s idea is followed, with Munu continuing to start, Palmer and Gordon starting together would replace Saka and Foden, reforming the Three Lions’ double wingers.
