German Media: Spain Worried About Rodri’s Absence, He’s Indispensable for City and Spain

Despite the impressive victory in their opening match, Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente isn’t without concerns. The condition of key player Rodri has cast a shadow over the team, which has won the European Championship three times (1964, 2008, 2012).

Reports suggest that the Manchester City midfielder’s availability against Italy remains uncertain. Rodri was substituted in the closing stages of the Croatia match due to a calf discomfort, although he later claimed the injury was minor and resumed training with the team. However, his full recovery remains questionable, leaving Spain facing a difficult decision.

With 51 caps for his country, Rodri’s role in the Italy match is crucial. He brings a wealth of experience from international tournaments like the Champions League, along with his talent as a midfield conductor, making him invaluable to coach de la Fuente. Italy international Davide Frattesi recently praised him, saying: “Rodri is the best midfielder in the world.”

However, Spain cannot afford to take any risks. A recurrence of Rodri’s injury against Italy could have more severe consequences than missing this single match.

Rodri already faced health issues towards the end of last season at Manchester City. His crucial role in the team led manager Pep Guardiola to rarely rest him, resulting in a demanding schedule that saw him feature in 50 matches over the season. The intense workload ultimately led the player to admit he desperately needed a break at the end of the season.

Spain are relieved to have Rodri healthy for the Euros in Germany. But de la Fuente knows he needs to use the midfielder cautiously to prevent his condition from worsening.

As a result, de la Fuente and his coaching staff are carefully considering whether to include Rodri in the Italy match and how to manage his playing time if he does feature. Although the game is crucial for topping Group B, Spain’s opening victory gives them some leeway to avoid taking unnecessary risks.
