On July 2, former England international Gabby Agbonlahor suggested that Southgate should drop Kane, saying that Kane is useless on the pitch and that he scores easy goals that anyone could score.
In the Round of 16 of the European Championship, England beat Slovakia 2-1 after extra time to reach the quarter-finals. Shortly after the start of extra time, Kane scored the goal that put England ahead.
Despite this, Agbonlahor remains skeptical of Kane: “I watched the England game, and Kane just stood in the middle of the pitch. He didn’t press, he didn’t bother the centre-backs. I played as a lone striker many times in my career, so I know what that role should be. He should be running around, he should be giving Bellingham and Foden more space to attack. He just stood there, did nothing.”
Agbonlahor believes Kane’s goal in extra time was meaningless: “Watkins or Tony could have scored that header in the same position. It was a simple close-range header, there was nothing difficult about it. Anyone could have scored that goal, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
