Italy’s elimination from the Euro 2024 Round of 16 after a shock defeat to Switzerland has sparked controversy, including comments from former Queens Park Rangers owner Flavio Briatore. He said Spalletti’s Italy was too timid and the FIGC could consider handing the reins to Allegri. 
Briatore said: “Italy’s elimination is shocking, the biggest disaster in our history. The game was chaotic, the players looked like they were playing together for the first time. They were all with their heads down, not knowing where they should be standing.”
“Maybe Spalletti’s arrogant character has prevented him from building a real team and instead fostered a group of timid kids. Even players like Chiesa and Barella look characterless now.
“Losing can happen, but the way Italy lost is unacceptable. When the game ended, the players seemed happy, or at least relieved.”
Briatore added: “In my opinion, Allegri would reclaim his top coach status as Italy manager. He would not be under the same club pressure and he has a lot of experience. Our Euro 2020 win was not because Italy was the best team, but because we were united.”
