On July 13, the European Championship will see England face Switzerland in the quarter-finals. Swiss coach Murat Yakın has spoken about his own experience of a heavy defeat to England during his playing days, and is looking to rewrite history.
In the 2004 European Championship, Switzerland suffered a 0-3 loss to England. Yakın, who played as a defender, was tasked with marking Wayne Rooney, but was unsuccessful. The match also saw Rooney become the youngest goalscorer in European Championship history at the age of 18 years and 237 days. Yakın reflected on the experience: “If you lose 0-3, you’re definitely not happy. As a player, you don’t have to explain why you lost so badly, that’s the coach’s job. In that match, certain England players played a crucial role, like Michael Owen and Paul Scholes.”
Yakın expressed that the current Swiss team is a far cry from the team he played for: “Compared to that time, we’ve made huge changes, and we’ve learned from our mistakes. Now, as a coach, I can also take lessons from that defeat.”
