Thousands of Georgians lined the streets of Tbilisi on Tuesday, waving national flags to welcome home their national team after their impressive performance at the European Championship. Though Georgia fell to Spain in the round of 16, their success in reaching the knockout stage as first-time participants has filled the country with pride.
The Georgian heroes rode through the capital in an open-top bus, greeted by cheers and applause, before arriving at Freedom Square for a welcome ceremony complete with fireworks.
Levan Jorjoliani, Head of the Presidential Administration, said: “We are gathered here today to express our gratitude to our players for the positive emotions and amazing performance they brought us. They achieved such excellent results as a first-time participant.” He also emphasized the pride the Georgian people felt for their players.
Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili also attended the welcome ceremony, presenting the players with honorary medals, recognizing their “historic feat” and “advancement of the game of football.” Zourabichvili noted the players’ recognition not only from the government but also from the people.
Giorgi Kvekveskiri, a midfielder for the Georgian national team and Spanish club Levante, said: “We had an unforgettable journey in Germany. As a first-time participant, we showed our own style and achieved our main goal. We believe that the Georgian people will be proud of us after this European Championship experience. We are happy and believe that we will achieve even better results in the future.”
