Brentford Defender: England’s Lack of a True Left-Back at the Euros Made Me Sad

Since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in the league game against Newcastle last September, Henry hasn’t played a match. Now he’s ready to begin preseason training and is eager to return to Brentford FC before the 2024/25 season.

“One thing that really motivates me is the prospect of the 2026 World Cup – the opportunity is always there and I’m still determined to be a part of the England squad,” said Henry. “It would be a dream come true. I’ve played for England at youth level, but getting to the senior team is one of my main goals. It’s what everyone plays football for: to play for your country. I know I had a chance before the injury, but people remind me that I can still do it, and it’s really encouraging. I just need to come back, stay healthy and play well.”

Henry added: “It made me sad seeing England at the Euros without a real left-back because I know I can do that job… Luke Shaw has been struggling with injuries and we don’t have another left-footed full-back in the squad. When I watched them this summer I felt I could have slotted into that team. It was frustrating not to be there, but it was still great to see them do well and reach the quarter-finals.”
