England are set to face Switzerland in the European Championship quarter-finals, and there are reports suggesting Gareth Southgate will revert back to a three-center-back formation for this match. Football commentator Chris Sutton believes this is a high-risk maneuver at this stage.
Writing in his column for The Mail, Sutton stated:
I’m not sure now is the right time for Southgate to gamble with a three-center-back system. Konsa plays for Villa, and Villa don’t play with three center-backs. Dunk plays for Brighton, and Brighton don’t play with three center-backs. Gomez at Liverpool, Walker and Stones at Manchester City, they don’t play with three center-backs either. Of course, some would say that Guardiola has his full-backs tucking in, so in reality they are playing with a back three.
This is before you even consider if England have enough wing-backs. We’re talking about Saka, Trippier, and Arnold, none of whom are natural wing-backs.
Looking at this tournament, Switzerland are undoubtedly the more organized side. They’ve beaten Italy and nearly beat hosts Germany.
Perhaps Southgate is thinking: If we use Switzerland’s system, our individual talent will be enough to get us through. He has that confidence.
While changing formation can increase tactical flexibility, I believe sticking with the previous approach is a more appropriate choice.
