Rangnick: We were unlucky, we would have won in extra time

Austria were knocked out of the European Championship in the Round of 16 after losing 1-2 to Turkey. Defender Demiral scored twice for Turkey, while Gregoritsch got a goal back for Austria. Baumgartner’s late goal was saved by the Turkish keeper. Austria manager Ralf Rangnick spoke to the media after the match.

“I can’t believe we’re going home today, we thought we would continue our journey. We played four great games, including today. Not everything went smoothly but those four matches were good and very intense. Now we need to take this feeling into the Nations League and then into the World Cup qualifiers.”

“We didn’t create enough chances and we didn’t defend their set pieces very well. We were unlucky, I believe if the game had gone into extra time, we would have won. We had time to equalize, but their keeper was like Gordon Banks, that made the game very difficult!”
