At 3:00 am on July 7th, the last quarterfinal of the European Championship will take place as Turkey takes on the Netherlands. In a pre-match interview, Turkish midfielder Orkun Kokcu expressed his heartbreak at missing the match due to suspension but was confident his teammates would secure a spot in the next round.
Regarding his yellow cards in the group stage match against the Czech Republic and the Round of 16 match against Austria, which led to his suspension, Kokcu said he was saddened: “It breaks my heart. I would do anything to be able to play in this crucial game against the Netherlands. But I have full confidence in my teammates. They will give everything they have to ensure the team progresses to the next round.”
Born in the Netherlands, Kokcu played in the youth academies of Groningen and Feyenoord. His dream is to play in the European Championship semi-final with Turkey next Wednesday. He still remembers when Turkey played Germany in the semi-finals of the 2008 European Championship. Kokcu reminisced: “I was seven years old then. I watched every game of that European Championship with my brother in the Netherlands. At that time, I dreamt that I could participate in such a competition.”
