Bosque: Few German players could make the Spanish squad, Lehmann belittles Spain to save his job

Ahead of Spain’s Euro quarter-final clash against Germany, former Spain manager Vicente del Bosque expressed his confidence in his former team and responded to the reactions from the German camp.

Bosque had previously stated that Spain would definitely beat Germany, which sparked discontent in the German side. To this, Bosque maintained that Spain had demonstrated exceptional strength in all aspects and believed that they were superior to their opponents overall.

Bosque said: “They may not know my style, I speak directly and firmly, I won’t go against my heart. In my opinion, Spain have been performing remarkably well on all levels, we appear to be stronger than everyone else.”

Lehmann recently stated that the Spanish team was small, lacked experience, and resembled a youth team. Regarding the former German goalkeeper’s assessment, Bosque said: “If your job requires you to give opinions, sometimes you have to speak without reservation, otherwise you’re fired. But in my case, I always speak based on facts and my knowledge of the team. Germany are indeed strong, but they don’t have many players who can reach the standards of the current Spanish national team.”

Looking back, Bosque admitted that Spain had a mental block against Germany during his time as manager, but this changed after the 2008 European Championship final and the 2010 World Cup semi-final. “From then on, we began to realize that we were on the same level as Germany,” he said. “If you look closely at every position in the German team, you’ll find that they don’t have many players who could make it into this current Spanish national team.”

Regarding Germany’s home advantage, Bosque said: “It’s certainly a worrying factor, playing at home always gives the team an extra boost. Despite this, I believe Spain are capable of overcoming this challenge.” This match will undoubtedly be a tough one, but Bosque is confident that with Spain’s overall strength and team spirit, they can overcome any opponent.
