Spanish national team winger Nico Williams recently gave an interview to Gazzetta dello Sport. In the interview, he said he really likes Balotelli, he is most afraid of Di Lorenzo, he thinks Bastoni is a monster on defence, and he also acknowledged that the Spanish style of play is changing.
Ahead of the match between Spain and Italy, Williams gave an interview to Gazzetta dello Sport, where he first spoke about his impressions of Italian football. He said: “I like Balotelli, I remember his name from Euro 2012. I’ve been following him ever since he joined Manchester City. Many of our generation, including my brother Iñaki, have even cut their hair like him.”
Then they talked about the upcoming match between Spain and Italy. He said: “It will be a tough, hard-fought game. It’s going to be an even match. The game could go either way. Of course, we want to win. We all watched the Albania-Italy match together. Italy’s performance was impressive. Defensively, they are very compact, they use high pressing, and it’s very difficult to find any space.”
Speaking of the Italian players, Williams highlighted Di Lorenzo and Bastoni. He said: “My teammates joke with me, they say they’re scared of facing Di Lorenzo. He’s like glue, he’ll stick to me. They might be right, but I will use my speed, strength, and dribbling to cause him trouble. Bastoni is a monster on defence, the whole team’s defence is great.”
Afterwards, they discussed the new style of Spanish football. He said: “This is a different team to the Spain that beat Italy in the Euro 2012 final. We don’t focus on possession as much, we play more vertical passes. I love dribbling, I learn from Brazilian players like Ronaldinho, Neymar, and now Vinicius. The Spanish style of football has changed because with me and Gavi, the team makes more direct passes. We have learnt from our lessons at the 2022 World Cup.”
Finally, he mentioned a little-known reason why he hopes Spain wins. He said: “July 12th is my birthday, July 13th is Gavi’s birthday. The Euro final is on July 14th. What a fun three days. We have to dare to dream, hopefully everything goes well.”
