Recently, Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes gave an interview to the 2024 European Championship Organizing Committee. Bruno talked about his special relationship with the number 8 and his desire to win the European Championship for Portugal.
About his special relationship with the number 8
“Nowadays, the correspondence between numbers and positions is different from before. In the past, we used to see numbers from 1 to 11. From the beginning of my career, I have always loved number 8, especially when I was 15 to 17 years old, because that’s when I started to play more in midfield.”
“The reason I connected with number 8 is that my father was born on the 8th, so he also wore that number. It’s a combination of factors. I was born on September 8th, so the connection started from the day I was born.”
About wearing the number 8 shirt for Portugal
“In the national team, I admire midfielder João Moutinho. Especially when I was young, I often admired him because of his playing style and wisdom. When I started playing for Portugal, I was fortunate enough to play with him.”
“I first wore this number because João was suspended for one game. I knew the number 8 shirt was his, and if nobody asked, he might quietly pass it on to someone else. After that, I’ve been waiting for João to retire so I could wear number 8 myself.”
Talking about the early days of his career
“Back then, it was more about playing on artificial turf, and the most important thing I learned was to be fearless. You have to be brave to take risks, never be satisfied, never give up, because there’s always another team waiting on the sidelines to replace the losing side.”
“That’s when I developed my competitive spirit and desire to win. Now, I still do the things I did when I was playing on artificial turf as a kid. I’m still passionate and determined, and I still have a big addiction to playing.”
Talking about his desire to win the European Championship
“Of course, I really want to win the European Championship, I want to recreate the team’s glory in 2016 in a different way, bring joy to the Portuguese people, and inspire children who love playing football to strive to play for their country.”
