Palmer spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about the pressure of taking a penalty in a shootout. He believes that the pressure is unlike anything else, but he wouldn’t shy away from responsibility when it’s his turn.
Palmer said: “It’s very different. I’ve spoken to other people about it, when you know you’re going to take one in a shootout, you start to think. You have the coin toss, then you’re standing there watching people take theirs, and the pressure just builds. In normal time, even if you miss a penalty, there’s still time to score again, but if you miss one in a shootout, there is no time to redeem yourself. If you miss and everyone else scores, it’s on you, and that adds pressure.”
But Palmer also said that he wouldn’t shy away from responsibility if called upon to take a penalty in a shootout. “If I’m on the pitch and I’m on the list, there’s nothing else I can do but go and take it. I’ve only taken two penalties in a shootout, and I missed one, but that was in youth football when I was a kid.”
Last season, Palmer scored all nine penalties he took for Chelsea. He came on as a substitute in the 66th minute of the Round of 16 match against Slovakia and put in a good performance, and it’s being reported that Southgate will start him in the quarter-final against Switzerland. Palmer said: “I’d love to start, everyone wants to start. But if I don’t, I’ve got to make sure I’m giving enough to make the manager make that decision.”
