At 3 am on July 6th, Portugal faced France in the European Championship quarter-finals. Before the match, British tabloid The Mirror exclusively interviewed British psychologist McVie, a former Norwich and Tottenham striker who played against Ronaldo several times in his 14-year career, and is now a professional psychologist.
McVie first spoke about Ronaldo’s penalty miss in extra time in the previous game, saying: “At the end of the day, he’s human, he makes mistakes. Even though he’s brilliant, he knows what he’s doing. He’s got the talent, experience and athletic ability.”
“Ronaldo crying was just him being emotional, something that is far removed from the image that most people have of footballers over the years, that they’re trying to be this great, brave, strong man who doesn’t show his emotions. So I think he deserves a lot of credit for that.”
On his performance in the upcoming games, McVie also said: “Putting a player who has been performing so well for so long in a team of outstanding players, he is bound to score. I wouldn’t be surprised if he scored a hat-trick in the next game (against France), because he’s a huge threat to the opposition.”
