Spain’s Match-Winner: De Gea vs Germany Like a World Cup Final, Winning Goal a Team Effort

On July 6th, Spain edged out Germany 2-1 after extra time in the Euro quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals. Match-winner Merino shared his thoughts on the game after the final whistle.

Merino described the feeling of scoring the winning goal: “My adrenaline was pumping, it felt like I was going to die. Scoring in the 119th minute was amazing, but it was a result of the team’s collective effort. Conceding the equaliser in the 90th minute was a blow, but getting the winning goal was deserved.”

Merino praised the quality of the game: “Everyone was looking forward to Spain vs. Germany, a clash between two of the world’s best teams, with the standard of a European Championship or even a World Cup final. We are a great team and we know how to handle pressure. I feel lucky in this stadium, my father also scored a goal here.”
