Sheringham Hopes England Will Repeat 1996 Victory Over Netherlands and Seek Revenge on Koeman

Sheringham Hopes England Will Repeat 1996 Victory Over Netherlands and Seek Revenge on Koeman

In an interview with The Sun, England legend Teddy Sheringham expressed his belief that England will win and that he hopes England will repeat its performance from the 1996 European Championship, where they thrashed the Netherlands.

At the 1996 European Championship, England, as hosts, were drawn in Group A with the Netherlands, Scotland, and Switzerland. In the third round of the group stage, England beat the Netherlands 4-1 at Wembley Stadium. Alan Shearer scored twice, while Sheringham scored in the 51st and 62nd minutes.

Sheringham believes that Gareth Southgate’s team will do better than he did in 1996, when England reached the semi-finals of the European Championship but lost to Germany on penalties. Sheringham said: “England will win, and then, win the 2024 European Championship!”

The 58-year-old Sheringham also said that the semi-final clash between England and the Netherlands in Dortmund will be England’s long-awaited revenge on Koeman, due to a feud from 31 years ago.

31 years ago, in October 1993, during the 1994 World Cup qualifiers, England and the Netherlands were locked in a group of death (along with Norway, Poland, and Turkey). The Three Lions were playing a decisive match against the Netherlands. England’s Platt had a clear chance, but was fouled by Koeman. The referee did not show Koeman a red card, causing a huge controversy. After that, Koeman scored a free kick to help the Netherlands defeat England, resulting in England missing out on the 1994 World Cup in the United States by just two points.

“Koeman scored a free kick, but he should have been sent off before that. It was very obvious,” Sheringham recalled the incident. “We weren’t playing well, but we shouldn’t have lost. We never forgot, so if we can beat Koeman’s team, it will be a sweet revenge.”
