Former England legend and now renowned football commentator Gary Lineker has said that even if Southgate wins the European Championship, he might still resign, and he supports Lampard as a potential replacement for the England manager.
Lineker said on his podcast: “Whatever happens, I think this will be Southgate’s last European Championship. If he wins it, I think he’ll definitely resign after the tournament. If he doesn’t win, I think he’ll walk away too, that’s his decision.”
There have been many voices in the media recently discussing who might replace Southgate. Lineker said that Lampard would be a good choice: “I wouldn’t dismiss Frank Lampard. I think he understands tactics, and players would quickly respect him. It’s England, who else can you get? Eddie Howe?”
Lampard, 46, retired in 2017 and went on to manage Chelsea youth team, Derby County, Chelsea, and Everton. His first stint at Chelsea came in July 2019 and lasted until January 2021. With the Blues facing a transfer ban, Lampard led the team to a 44-15-25 record in 84 games, scoring 171 goals and conceding 116. From April to June 2023, he returned as Chelsea’s interim coach, recording a 1-2-8 record in 11 games. His best result was the FA Cup runner-up finish in 2020. Overall, his managerial experience isn’t considered very impressive.
However, Lineker hasn’t wavered in his belief in Lampard: “I think he’s been a little unlucky in some parts of his managerial career, but actually, he knows his stuff tactically.”
A few days ago, Lampard was invited as a guest on a show during England’s game against Switzerland. He provided around three minutes of tactical analysis, demonstrating his high tactical acumen. Lineker praised, “Frank did a really great job in those three minutes!”
