After losing to the Netherlands and sadly being eliminated from the 2024 European Championship quarter-finals, Turkey head coach Vincenzo Montella spoke to the media, praising the team’s performance and encouraging the players, particularly key players like Çalhanoğlu and Güler.
In less than a year, Montella has built a young and energetic Turkish national team. The team has shown significant progress and growth, going from being eliminated in the group stage of the 2021 European Championship, to failing to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and now reaching the quarter-finals of the European Championship in Germany.
On the young players in the team, Montella pointed out: “As one of the youngest teams in this European Championship, we may not be able to leverage the advantage of experience. But at crucial moments, we could have performed better. Due to our proactive playing style, many neutral fans became our supporters. This is our valuable asset and the direction we need to continue to uphold.”
Regarding future plans, Montella added: “In September, we will face the Nations League matches, followed by the World Cup qualifiers. We will be at our best to face these matches and continue to improve ourselves.”
Looking back at the match against the Netherlands, Montella said: “Although we were ultimately eliminated, we should be proud of ourselves. We had the chance to go further, victory was within reach, but that’s the beauty and cruelty of football.”
Finally, Montella confidently stated: “I believe the Turkish national team is already strong enough to be among the top five teams in Europe.”
