July 8, England left-back Luke Shaw spoke to The Telegraph about manager Gareth Southgate and other topics.
Do you feel grateful for Southgate’s wait for you?
Shaw: “Yes, absolutely. The manager thought I’d be back sooner from injury, but unfortunately I had some setbacks. I was desperate to get back on the pitch but couldn’t do it as quickly as I’d hoped.”
“Honestly, I owe Gareth a lot. He has shown such faith in me. If it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t even be at this Euros, and even when I wasn’t playing, he was just waiting quietly, believing I would get back fit. So you know, I owe him a lot.”
How did it feel to knock out Switzerland?
Shaw: “It was a fantastic moment because I was back on the pitch. I just loved being out there. And we won the game, which made it even better. We’re through to the next round.”
What did Southgate say in the dressing room after the game?
Shaw: “He just said how proud he was of the young lads and the whole team. He told us to enjoy the night, but it’s not over yet. There are still two games to go in this Euros.”
“We can’t get ahead of ourselves. There are two more games to win if we want to win the whole thing. We have to keep moving forward, focus on the next game and be fully prepared for it. It’s a Euros, it’s not like any other game.”
