With less than two hours to go until kick-off, an estimated 10,000 ticketless England fans remain in Dusseldorf’s city center.
The Burgplatz fan zone is packed, with a crowd dominated by England supporters enjoying electronic music played by a DJ. Pubs along the Rhine are buzzing with business, as Three Lions fans dance on tables.
One West Bromwich supporter told reporters: “We don’t have tickets, but we don’t care. I just hope we can all celebrate at the final whistle.”
The Daily Mirror’s chief reporter, Andy Lines, said: “Dusseldorf this afternoon is awash with a carnival atmosphere. England and Swiss supporters are mixing happily. I saw lots of kids, aged from six to 15, who have clearly been brought by their parents to watch the game on Saturday. One mum assured me: ‘Don’t worry, he’ll be back at school on Monday morning!’”
