July 8, former Italian international Leonardo Bonucci spoke about Italy’s dismal Euro journey in an interview with Cronache di spogliatoio.
Why did Inter players perform poorly for Italy?
Bonucci: “When we Juventus players participated in the 2016 and 2021 European Championships, we had been playing together at Juventus for many years, whereas this group of Inter players haven’t been together for as long.”
“It’s obvious that when you play together regularly, you develop a better understanding. You can maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. Your playing styles and mentality evolve as a unit. When you haven’t been playing together for long, there are a lot of uncertainties. The coach needs to guide everyone to work together, only then can you go further.”
Bonucci made 13 appearances for Fenerbahçe last season, starting four times and providing one assist. The 37-year-old former Italian international announced his retirement at the end of the season, ending his professional career.
