Lineker praises Arnold: “A great player” despite being a midfield experiment, scoring a penalty as a substitute

England beat Switzerland 5-3 on penalties in the Euro quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals. Arnold came on as a substitute in the 115th minute and scored the winning penalty in the shootout. After the game, former England star Lineker singled out Arnold for praise on BBC’s coverage.

Lineker said: “I can’t describe how happy I am for Trent. He’s obviously had a difficult time recently. Putting him in midfield wasn’t working, because the whole team wasn’t gelling. To come on as a sub late in the game, only six minutes later to be in the shootout, scoring the winning penalty… he’s got great ability, he’s a great player.”
