On July 11, the Netherlands lost 1-2 to England in the Euro semi-finals in Germany, sadly ending their run in the tournament. This was the fifth time the Oranje have fallen short in their six appearances in the Euro semi-finals.
This was the first time the Dutch had reached the Euro semi-finals in 20 years. In Euro history, only Germany (9 times) has made it to the semi-finals more often than the Netherlands (6 times), but with drastically different results. Germany lifted the trophy in 1972, 1980 and 1996, while the Netherlands only managed to reach the final and win in 1988, relying on the brilliance of the ‘Three Musketeers’. Interestingly, in the Euro where the Netherlands won, they faced the host nation, West Germany, in the semi-finals.
Netherlands’ Euro semi-final history: 1976 Netherlands 1-3 Czechoslovakia 1988 Netherlands 2-1 West Germany 1992 Netherlands 2-2 (6-7 on penalties) Denmark 2000 Netherlands 0-0 (1-3 on penalties) Italy 2004 Netherlands 1-2 Portugal 2024 Netherlands 1-2 England
