Hindsight? Carragher: Southgate Should Have Substituted Kane in England’s 2021 Final Against Italy

England has beaten the Netherlands and advanced to the European Championship final, where they will face Spain. Following the Three Lions’ return to the European Championship final, former England international Jamie Carragher expressed his views in a Telegraph column: “Three years ago in the European Championship final, when England was leading Italy 1-0, Southgate should have substituted Kane. In the just-concluded match, Southgate substituted Kane with Watkins, a significant decision.”

Hindsight? Carragher: Southgate Should Have Substituted Kane in England’s 2021 Final Against Italy

Carragher believes that Southgate’s tenure as England manager can be summarized by two moments: the moment he didn’t substitute Kane, and the moment he did.

Carragher wrote, “Before the semi-final, I thought about the 2021 European Championship final between England and Italy. That night, the game was held at Wembley Stadium. One of the reasons England lost was that Southgate didn’t bring on a faster, fitter forward to replace Kane, what we usually call a ‘finisher.'”

Additionally, Carragher stated unequivocally, “Many people analyze England’s final against Italy and believe that the reason they ultimately lost was a negative approach and their emotions. That’s not true. England’s strategy was actually good, it’s just that Kane couldn’t pose a threat to Italy on the counter-attack.”

On the other hand, Carragher praised Southgate’s magical substitution in this semi-final, “We’ve seen a different Southgate in 2024 than in 2021. Going forward, we have reason to be excited for the match against Spain, especially with players like Phil Foden improving every game. Hopefully, England can achieve their goals.”
