As France’s starting right-back, Jules Koundé sat down with Fox43 ahead of the European Championship semi-final to discuss his role with the national team and the upcoming clash against Spain.
France has yet to score a goal from open play in this European Championship and seems far from their best form, but Koundé has been a consistent bright spot on the right flank. When asked if he had spoken to his Barcelona teammate, Gavi, ahead of this epic European Championship semi-final, Koundé said: “No, I didn’t text him, but I did have some conversations with Pedri about his injury. Gavi’s threat? He’s definitely a big source of threat, but I’d say the whole Spanish team is dangerous.”
When elaborating on the young Spanish prodigy, Koundé recalled his first training session with Gavi: “Yes, he’s incredible. I think it’s remarkable to have such a successful season at his age and carry all the expectations and pressure of a whole country.”
Earlier this week, in France’s penalty shootout victory against Portugal, Koundé calmly stepped up and converted his penalty. When asked about how he felt about being assigned penalty duties, Koundé said: “I felt no nerves at all when I was assigned to take the penalty and felt very confident because I’ve practiced penalties many times at both Barcelona and with France. I’ve felt very good at this European Championship and having the trust of the coach and my teammates makes me feel good. I always try to do my best and so far, everything has gone very well.”
