Catalan media outlet Sport reports that Barcelona will receive €3.161 million from UEFA as compensation for players participating in the European Championship. This figure also sets a historical record for Barcelona’s European Championship compensation payments.
Barcelona received this compensation through 13 players: Pedri, Gavi, Ferran Torres, Ter Stegen, Lewandowski, Christensen, Koundé, De Jong, Fermín, Gündoğan, Cancelo, João Félix, and Dembélé. The calculation is complex, related to how far the players’ respective national teams go in the European Championship. It also considers not just the player’s 2023-24 season club but also the 2022-23 season club, and if a player played for different teams during this period, the compensation is paid proportionally. The specific compensation amount for each player is shown in the image.
Sport calculated that if France had progressed in the France-Spain match, Barcelona would have received approximately €3,044,955. Now that Spain has advanced, Barcelona’s earnings will increase, with the club receiving €3,161,655.
This is the first time Barcelona has received European Championship compensation exceeding €3 million. Barcelona’s previous record was €2,850,005.6 from the 2020 European Championship (held in 2021). In previous European Championships, Barcelona’s earnings were €201,749.9 million (2016), €221,020.2 million (2012), and €95,509 million (2008).
At the World Cup, Barcelona’s record for compensation payments was €411,490.2 million in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. At that time, Barcelona had 17 players (club record) participating. Additionally, 7 players, including Messi and Griezmann, who were no longer at the club, still had some compensation belonging to Barcelona.
