According to journalist Susy Campanale, Polish referee Szymon Marciniak is currently the top contender to referee the Euro Cup final. Michael Oliver and François Letexier are also on the shortlist, but their inclusion depends on whether England and France reach the final.
Previously, several media outlets reported that Italian referee Orsato would referee the Euro Cup final. Orsato, 48, has been an international referee since 2010 and officiated the 2020 Champions League final. In this Euro Cup, he participated in two group stage matches, England vs Serbia and Portugal vs Slovenia, and the quarterfinal match between England and Switzerland. He is scheduled to retire after this Euro Cup.
However, this claim was quickly refuted. Susy Campanale stated that Orsato is not even on the contender list. The 43-year-old Polish referee Marciniak is the top contender to officiate the final. This referee was the main referee for the second leg of the 2023/24 Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. That game almost tarnished his reputation, with as many as four controversial calls. The biggest controversy was his premature whistle that invalidated Bayern’s equaliser. He was also the referee for the 2022 Qatar World Cup final. In this tournament, he participated in the group stage match between Belgium and Romania and the round of 16 match between Italy and Switzerland.
Additionally, English referee Oliver and French referee Letexier are also under consideration. However, this depends on whether England and France reach the final.
