UEFA has announced that French referee François Letexier will officiate the European Championship final between England and Spain.
The final, which will be played in Berlin, will be the 35-year-old referee’s fourth match in the tournament. He has been an international referee since 2017.
Letexier will be assisted by fellow Frenchmen Cyril Gringore and Mehdi Rahmouni, while Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will be the fourth official.
In December, Letexier was accused by then-manager of Reims, Will Still, of making “inappropriate” comments about a possible move by Still to English club Sunderland.
It was reported that Still approached Letexier to express his concerns about the referee’s performance in a match. During their conversation, Letexier allegedly said: “Don’t worry, it will be better over in England.”
Still said: “I found it quite funny, or not funny at all. He said something along the lines of ‘It will be better in England’. I don’t think it was appropriate, but it wasn’t a story, nothing interesting.”
Letexier later disputed Still’s claims, arguing that the manager might have misunderstood him. He told L’Équipe: “At the end of the match, I simply said, ‘Maybe you’ll have better luck in England’.”
Since then, Letexier has been involved in several high-profile matches. He has refereed 10 matches in the Champions League and Europa League, and was the fourth official in the 2024 Champions League final at Wembley between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. He also refereed the 2023 UEFA Super Cup, which was played in Piraeus, Greece between Manchester City and Sevilla.
