UEFA Poll: Which European Championship Final is the Best? Spain’s Victory Over Italy is the Most Popular Choice

Prior to the match, UEFA launched a poll titled “Five Great European Championship Finals,” asking fans to vote for the best final in history. As of press time, the 2012 European Championship final is the most popular choice.

UEFA selected five candidate finals. First, the 1988 European Championship final, “The Three Musketeers Legend,” where the Netherlands defeated the Soviet Union 2-0 with goals from Gullit and Van Basten. Second, the 1992 European Championship final, “The Andersen’s Fairy Tale,” where Denmark stunned the world by defeating Germany 2-0 with goals from Jensen and Vilfort, and a phenomenal performance by Schmeichel.

Third, the 2000 Millennium European Championship, “The Golden Goal Decider.” Italy’s Delvecchio scored in the 55th minute, but Wiltord equalized in the 90th minute, sending the match into extra time. Trezeguet scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute, securing victory for France. Fourth, the 2004 “Greek Miracle,” the biggest upset in European Championship history. Greece advanced through the tournament and faced Portugal, led by superstars like Ronaldo, Figo, and Deco, in the final. Charisteas scored the winning goal, giving Greece a 1-0 victory and the trophy.

Fifth, the 2012 European Championship final, “The Dream Team’s Solo Dance.” Spain, the 2008 European Championship and 2010 World Cup champions, faced Italy in the final. The Spanish “Dream Team” dominated the match and won 4-0 with goals from David Silva, Alba, Torres, and Mata.

As of press time, the voting results for the five matches are as follows: the 2012 European Championship final has a 50% vote share, far ahead of the other four matches. The 2004 “Greek Miracle” narrowly leads the 1988 European Championship final, “The Three Musketeers Legend,” in second place.
