Koeman: We played better than England in the final minutes, extra time would have been fairer

Netherlands coach Koeman gave an interview to the media after his team was knocked out of the European Championship semi-finals by England 2-1, despite Simons’ opening goal.

Koeman said: “England caused us problems in midfield in the first half, we didn’t restrict their passing between Bellingham and Foden. Then we added a midfielder and things became more balanced.”

“I feel we were more lively than them in the last 20 to 25 minutes, but they scored a great goal and that’s football. Maybe we deserved extra time, but this is how it is. We can still be proud of our players and our national team, because we played a great game.”

“I am disappointed with the result. The game started very well for us, we scored the first goal. Then we had problems in midfield, allowing dangerous players like Bellingham and Foden to take over the game. We made adjustments, regained some control, and in the last 20 minutes we felt we were in a position to win the game, but then we conceded a goal ourselves.”

“I am confident about the future. This team has more potential, and we have more players who can join. We work well together, we have a connection, and we are close to the final. I am proud of this team.”

“Simons played very well, he scored a great goal. He has been training hard, and I’m happy to have a player like him, he will have a great future.”

“England were very good after going 0-1 down. Spain are playing beautiful football, with exciting wingers who take off and start attacks from the back. But England are in the final, even though Spain are playing very well, maybe England can beat them, why not?”
