After France’s defeat to Spain, missing out on the European Championship final, England legend Alan Shearer heavily criticized the attacking performance of the French team, aiming his criticism at France captain Mbappe.
Although France took the lead early in the game with a header from Mouani, they ultimately fell to goals from Yamal and Olmo. They will be packing their bags for home instead of heading to Berlin for the final. Notably, Mouani’s goal was France’s first goal from open play in this European Championship, after they had only managed a penalty from Mbappe and two goals gifted by opponents’ own goals.
Shearer believes that the root of France’s misfortune lies in coach Deschamps’ failure to ignite the firepower of his attacking players. He specifically pointed out that as captain and star player, Mbappe’s performance in this European Championship was incredibly disappointing. Shearer said, “Mbappe only contributed this little in the game, we kept saying to wait for them to find their form, and today there was a goal early on, Mbappe played a good ball, Mouani really finished the goal, and we finally thought France were going to ‘start’.”
However, the course of the match left Shearer feeling very disappointed. He said, “France had the advantage, I thought scoring early on might give them confidence to continue finishing in front of goal, and in fact they were in good positions many times. Dembele was probably the most frustrated today, because he had chances many times but didn’t get good passes, and nothing came of it, it was very frustrating. I was feeling frustrated and angry in the studio, you can imagine how the attacking players felt on the pitch.”
