German pundit: FA should convince Klopp to take over England

Former Chelsea player and renowned German pundit Sebastian Kneissl, speaking on talkSPORT, believes that the FA should approach Jurgen Klopp to become England’s next manager.

It is widely expected that Gareth Southgate will step down after the 2024 European Championships, ending his eight-year reign as England manager. While the focus now is on the upcoming quarter-final clash with Switzerland, the FA should be looking at potential replacements. Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been touted as a favourite, while Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola are both currently in club roles.

However, the FA should not overlook Jurgen Klopp, who recently stepped down from his role at Liverpool. The former Reds manager is currently enjoying a well-deserved break, attending events like Taylor Swift concerts and watching the Euros in his homeland, and is also rumoured to be a candidate for the US national team job.

Kneissl, on talkSPORT, suggested that the FA approach Klopp about the England job: “I can understand why Klopp wouldn’t take another Premier League job. He has a great sense of himself and would be thinking, ‘what can I do? What impact can I have?’ But, if he did take another job, I doubt the US national team would be the right fit for him.”

Kneissl continued: “The only option I see is that he replaces Nagelsmann as the Germany manager. I really think he could reach the level that Beckenbauer reached with Germany. Beckenbauer is Germany’s greatest ever, and I think Klopp could reach that level and bring the World Cup back to Germany.”

Kneissl also suggested that the FA should act quickly and contact Klopp: “The FA have to have a conversation with Jurgen. It is their job to find the best manager, so they should absolutely go knocking on Jurgen’s door. If the FA approached Klopp, would he accept? I don’t think he necessarily would. But the FA should still make the request, even if they know they might get a ‘no’. It’s their duty and responsibility.”
